Six Characters In Search Of An Author
"There is one for this person, and another for that. Diverse conscience.
So we have this illusion of being one person for all, of having a personality that is unique in all our acts. But it isn't true. We perceive this when tragically perhaps, in something we do, we are as it were, suspended, caught up in the air on a kind of hook. "
The drama, "Six Characters In Search Of An Author", played by the six characters that showed up at the stage, has a very key aspect: Where does the justice stand? The father, the daughter, the wife,or the boy?
Like any other literature, the play is, as I perceive, a mirror of the author's own state of mind. Through the words of the father, Pirandello expressed his inner struggles in searching a scale for justice to determine whether he should do "the just thing" or go with the weaknesses of his humanity. In the play, he did not give favor to any of the characters. Every man's deeds, regardless of his characters of good or evil, make sense in his own mental world. Everyone has his own excuses of his mistakes. “For the drama lies all in this -- in the conscience that I have, that each one of us has. We believe this conscience to be a single thing, but it is many-sided. ” Pirandello's reasoning on judgement of justice by a single scenario lies as "an atrocious injustice to judge us by that action alone, as if all our existence were summed up in that one deed"
In act II, the author introduced the question of reality: which one is truer, the characters themselves or the actors? The actors play out the characters in their own interpretations, but the author is in the characters, which represents that the characters should be the ruler, the truth. However, I don't necessarily agree with that. When an author expresses his minds through his works, he should know that readers do not necessarily perceive it the same way the author want them to perceive it. Literature is a form of art, of communicating with social deviance, about things that are at the depth of humanity, something that human share intellectually. And we usually see those cores through peeking from our own lenses of life. As for discussing of which one is truer, the author's interpretation or the readers' interpretation, I do not see a great significance in that.
